Vintage Thursday

Both of these plates are Bavarian. The yellow plate above has hand painted yellow roses on it and gold trim. The mark on the back says Rosenthal. There is a signature on the front, in the drawing, but I can't read the name. The plate is in beautiful condition and has no crazing or chips.
The plate below is dark orange fading to yellow in the middle with hand painted daisy like flowers . It has a gold trim around the scalloped edge. The mark on the back is a circle with the letters JHR inside. The words Alice and Bavaria are above and below the circle . Another word , in script, "Favorite" is on the back but stamped in a different place.I cannot find any information on this mark.

Both of these plates are 8" in diameter and in very good condition. I bought them this week at our local thrift shop. They were $3.50 each. I wanted some plates to use in the plate rack on the wall in my livingroom. Something more like Springtime. These seem to go well. They should carry us into Summer. Sometimes you just need a little change to make a room look brighter. Old plates are wonderful for this and often very inexpensive, especially if you find them before they get to an "Antique" store.

Vintage Thursday

I was cleaning up the kitchen yesterday morning and I moved this surup pitcher to clean the counter. My mind went directly to VTT and I realized that one of my vintage kitchen things had never had it's Thursday moment of fame. I'm not sure how this got over looked. Probably one of those times when I was coming and going down to the Bay Area and it just slipped my seive of a mind. This pitcher sits here on the sink all the time because I just love the look of it and the colors are so cheerful.
My friend Karen gave it to me for my birthday. We had a rather late birthday lunch and exchange of gifts some months back and she had found this beautiful surup pitcher for me. It's in perfect condition and is hand painted. It stands 9.5 inches tall and holds a lot of surup. It just makes you want to make waffles or pancakes. I think it's just a wonderful example of how important breakfast was back in the day, when everyone sat down together and actually ate the same thing( that Mom fixed). This lovely pitcher represents a different time when tables where "set" and Moms cared about how the morning table looked.
This thin little recipe book was my Mothers. It was published ( and I hate to admit this ) the year I was born~1944. Oh well, sometimes you just have to "suck it up" and be honest.
I love the illustrations which are more like the 30's than the 40's . I found a recipe for Prunola in it and that was a very popular dessert at the time. Years later, when I took Home Economics in High School, it was the recipe of choice for class and it's name was changed to "Prune Whip". Made it sound more classy. Like a dance..., Let's all do the PRUNE WHIP. Does anyone remember Prune Whip? Come on..., be honest. I know someone must remember making prune whip, and aprons in "Home Eck".

Vintage Thursday

This is a 1932 Better Homes & Garden magazine that I gave my sister for Christmas tucked into an antique planter. I think this magazine is so beautiful with it's muted colors and frayed edges.
The ads are so much fun to read....,
and this Westinghouse stove is just the kind of stove I would love to buy for my kitchen, only it would be a zillion times more expensive, now, if I could even find one in good shape.
Then there is the article about HOW AND WHERE TO KEEP YOUR CLOTHES. I guess they had to be organized back then because look at the size of the closets.
I still have this fantasy about owning an old house, but I don't know about those closets. I thought I had small closets in this house, but mine are twice as big as these in the magazine. Our closets are jammed full. I don't know why? I think we need a lot more space in this house for clothes and storage. Either that or we need to read this article and get organized.
