Conversation with the River

I went again to the river, along the old road that drops down into the river canyon.

The river is low and moving very slow right now because of the dry winter we are having. It's the lowest I've seen in 20 years. It seems to struggle and yet it keeps moving.

This is the great Mokelumne River. It carries memories. It has seen many things, many changes. This river knows that we are  visitors. We will only be here for a short time and then there will be change.

"Rivers know this: there is no hurry."

" Sometimes, if you stand on the bottom rail of a bridge...

and lean over to watch the river slipping slowly away beneath you,

you will suddenly know everything there is to be known."

"If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember.

You are braver than you believe,

 stronger than you seem,

 and smarter than you think.

But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart.. I’ll always be with you.“ (In my heart.)

"Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind."Pooh?" he whispered.

"Yes, Piglet?"

"Nothing," said Piglet, taking Pooh's hand. "I just wanted to be sure of you.”

This post is about my love for the Mokelumne River. I go there, as Piglet would say, "to be sure..." To look at it and listen to it... to think and remember.

California's rivers are suffering from the drought and man's excessive use of water. Maybe " mother nature" is telling us that we need to pay attention. Please conserve water. Each person is responsible for their own efforts.

I will be gone for a few days. See you next week.
