Vintage Thursday on Wednesday Night

When my sister and I were in Cambria, CA. on our vacation. I bought this soup plate in an wonderful antique store on Main St. I always wanted one of these plates after seeing one in a magazine and in a blogging friend's kitchen. So, when I spotted this one I decided to splurge and buy it. The mark on the back says it was made in Japan and below "Japan" are the initials *B.F.K.* . It's also stamped with some symbols that were pressed into it before it was fired. I love this plate and hope I can find more information about it. If anyone out there knows anything about this kind of plate, please let me know.

These two necklaces were at the local thrift store. I needed pearls for some jewelry I'm making and these were very pretty ones with all the connections and clasps too. The "choker" with the rhinestones was $2.00 and the other one was $1.50. What a deal

I love old jewelry. It's so fun to use old pieces of jewelry in something that you make. I will be making some gourd jewelry again soon and with my new skills, from the workshop, I hope to be able to make some pretty sparkly pieces. We all need a little BLING in our lives and these old necklaces should add a lot of "pretty" to whatever I make.
Lastly....

When I did a Vintage Thursday post in March on these two plates I said I would show everyone what I did with the plates. Well here they are on my living room wall above the front window. I couldn't find another plate that looked good with these two, so I put the straw hat in the middle. I like it. It's nice for Spring and Summer. What do you think?

Vintage Thursday

Both of these plates are Bavarian. The yellow plate above has hand painted yellow roses on it and gold trim. The mark on the back says Rosenthal. There is a signature on the front, in the drawing, but I can't read the name. The plate is in beautiful condition and has no crazing or chips.
The plate below is dark orange fading to yellow in the middle with hand painted daisy like flowers . It has a gold trim around the scalloped edge. The mark on the back is a circle with the letters JHR inside. The words Alice and Bavaria are above and below the circle . Another word , in script, "Favorite" is on the back but stamped in a different place.I cannot find any information on this mark.

Both of these plates are 8" in diameter and in very good condition. I bought them this week at our local thrift shop. They were $3.50 each. I wanted some plates to use in the plate rack on the wall in my livingroom. Something more like Springtime. These seem to go well. They should carry us into Summer. Sometimes you just need a little change to make a room look brighter. Old plates are wonderful for this and often very inexpensive, especially if you find them before they get to an "Antique" store.

Past Due Tuesday: Candlesticks and Re-purposed plate.

These candlesticks are probably from Italy. My great-grandmother was born in Milan and came here to marry my great-grandfather. I was told she brought a Dowry (which is the property that a woman brought to her husband at the time of the marriage) with her. These lovely candlesticks were far too fancy for life on the ranch. At the time, in the Napa Valley, there were only small farms and a beautiful little town. It was not the fancy, tourist mecca it is today. So, coming from a great northern Italian city and a wealthy family, I suspect that she brought some very nice things with her.
These candle holders are black glass, appear to be hand blown ( there are no "seams" anywhere.) and the design is etched into the glass. They're rimmed with gold which is very worn. There are no markings of any kind that would give us an idea where they came from. Mom never used them that we can remember and these were found in a cabinet above the refrigerator where other assorted candlesticks were stored..., most of them never having been used.

They are really beautiful; very "old world". I will do some research on the Internet and see if I can find some information on them.

This plate of my grandmothers is very interesting. Again, there are no markings. It's carve, beautifully, with rose buds and leaves and looks like it might have had a cup or vase attached to it. Also, there is a broken part that might have been a handle. The pottery is beautiful and almost transparent but I don't think it's porcelain. It's heavy for a small plate. The carved flowers and leaves are very well done.
I use it to burn my large candles on because of it's flat center. I love the way it looks. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be and what it's made of?
