Difficult times for a young boy.

I came down to my sister's house because her youngest son had to have an eye operation. He is a special 16 yr. old kid with very special needs and this was a difficult thing for the doctors to attempt to do. He had a detached retina and a tear in the retina that need to be repaired. This young nephew of mine doesn't understand any of this because he has so many disabilities, so it is very difficult to prepare him for a procedure of this caliber. Wednesday he was admitted to the hospital and was in surgery for quite a few hours. Everything went well. The surgeon drew us pictures of what he had done. It's amazing. They removed the lens until the eye heals. So there is no vision in his left eye until they replace the lens in a few weeks. My nephew doesn't understand any of this. He only knows that things are not normal.
The problem was that when he woke up he didn't want to eat or drink anything and he wouldn't take the medication for pain. He became agitated and was in a lot of discomfort. The surgeon wanted to see him again yesterday morning so we took him down to the eye clinic. The eye was doing all right but he was transferred to emergency for dehydration and because he was so lethargic. We spent all day there. They hydrated him and gave him some pain meds intravenously. He was not happy about all this.
They finally brought him home at 9:30 last night. He slept all night. Today he is resting and sleeping most of the time. It's still hard to get the water and meds down his throat but it's better today.
Keep my nephew and his family in your thoughts. He understands so little of what is happening to him and it's very scary for him.
The weather has cooled off and their was fog this morning. Ah! How I love the San Francisco Bay Area in the Summer. When it gets really hot, as it has been this past week, the heat finally pulls the fog in and cools things off.
I'm going to spend the night with my grandchildren tonight and then I will go home tomorrow.
The Prospector says that the animals miss me...especially Carl and Cutter. I miss them too. It's time to return to the farm because I have to get ready for my trip on a big airplane. I'm going to MONTANA.
I will tell you all about it when I get back.
See ya back at the farm....

  1. That is a great blessing for your sister and your nephew to have you there for support. I prayed that your nephew will heal, be free of pain and calm. Oh, your animal family missed you, of course! You spent time with your grandchildren which is a treat, I am sure.

Keep us filled in on your upcoming trip! Much love to you for giving me the idea of teaching what I know--my class went wonderfully today!

  9. So tough to help these SN kids, and hard to see them struggle with pain and lack of understanding. Your sister must be a really patient mom & I know she loved having you around and really appreciates your support.
back at the farm, wonder if Brownie misses you?!
