Mokelumne River and the Puppies

This is the Mokelumne River. We live very close to it, so sometimes we take the dogs and go for a walk along the edge of it. It has not been designated as "Wild and Scenic" yet, but hopefully it will be some day. This river needs to be protected. It's so beautiful that it takes your breath away. We need to preserve this beauty for the generations to come. Read about it here.

This was Cutter's first trip to the river and he was not too enthusiastic about it. He did not want to walk down from the road to the small beach... not even with Carl. So we carried him down and once he got down there he was OK... kind of. I could just hear him saying "Oh, this is different. Big water, lots of water. Oh, but lots of new smells and Oh, what's this." He was so cute. Carl didn't tell Cutter that last year, when he was a puppy, he didn't want to get in the water either. Oh no...

Carl sacheted down to the water and walked right into it. Not far, but he was showing Carl that he was a big dog and this was how you "get in the river". Cutter followed Carl all over the beach but he never went into the water.
It was a beautiful day. We will have plenty of time to get Cutter use to the "big water" and, if nothing else, it's the most wonderful place just to take a walk or have a picnic.
We came away with some great photos and a bag full of trash left on the beach. Some folks just can't seem to find a garbage can if their lives depended on it and the irony of it is that there were two cans up on the road where we parked. Littering is a way of life for some people.

My sister is here for a few days. We are going to get a pedicure and have lunch in Sutter Creek today. See ya later....

  1. Rivers are such special places. The one near us is our favorite place to go at anytime of the year. As for litterbugs....AAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!(translates to many swear words) The funny thing is that the trash they leave is lighter than the stuff they bring in! Good for you for picking it up. I had a look at the site and signed on to protect it. Maybe some day I will see it for real.

  3. Oh people are lazy- makes me worried about my WAMPP http://wampp.cookappeal.com/ event, I have to make sure enough people are on property when its closing time to pick up after people-

love rivers, streams, creeks, and most bodies of water. My son called the other day, I asked him if his new sweetie like to swim like he and I- he said yes, I said oh in the pool, he said no the river- YIKES, he meant the Missouri river, which he lives very close to- my heart quivered at the thought of him in that BIG river :)

Puppies are having a lovely day!

  4. That looks like a nice area - except for the trash that some insist should remain part of the scenery....Bless you for picking up after them. The world is a prettier place because of people like you!

  5. I have always loved being by the river. When we were growing up, we frequently went swimming on the Cosumnes. I think that now, if I lived near the river, I would love to take a picnic lunch or just snacks, and go find a SHADY spot, and at least put my feet in to cool off a bit on a hot foothill summer day. Sounds nice. Have fun with your sister!

  6. I love the Mokelumne River! I'm sad that we no longer have the beautiful Stanislaus River. I spent entire summers on that river riding the rapids back in the 70's. I still remember my mother asking me why I didn't have any tan lines:) We were heartbroken when they damned it up. And double curses to litterbugs. What are they thinking? Have a wonderful lunch in S.C. Are you going to Susan's Place to eat by any chance?

  7. OMG... I know that I have been fighting depression for a while and doing the duck and cover thing but I can't believe I missed you getting another pup. Cutter is such a cutie! And I went back to March to find out when he came to live with you and the Prospector and the rest of the bunch on the farm and it looks like Carl and Cutter now have worked things out as to who should listen to whom... Now I'm going to go back and see what all I've missed by putting my head in the sand.

    Thank you, my friend.

  8. A truly lovely river. Love how Cutter looks so apprehensive, too cute.

I give thanks that our little stream comes down out of the mountains straight to us, the only people who might go near it would be intrepid trampers and they are true nature lovers as a rule.

But I have a rubbish bag I always take to the beach and rarely find nothing to put in it! It infuriates me!

  11. Well, I love dropping by and finding out what you're doing (and Cutter), but I have to tell you also that I LOVED what you wrote on my latest blog posting. Your words hit the mark.

I found out that The Chicken Lady also ordered little carved marble headstones for her beloved hens (bantams). Evidently she enclosed them in a little fenced burying ground area.

My research continues and I hope maybe to write a children's story about kindness to animals. You get it, I know.

    Love,

  12. Great pictures. I wish people would respect our scenery and quit trashing it. We have the same problem right here around our property. Hope you and your sister have a nice visit. Have a blessed day.
